POHANG, Jul. 24 (Korea Bizwire) – The coastal city of Pohang, South Korea, is set to host its 8th annual Yeongildae Sand Festival on July 27 and 28 at Yeongildae Beach, showcasing intricate sand sculptures and offering a variety of interactive experiences for visitors.
According to city officials, the festival will feature three main sand sculpture exhibitions, each telling a unique story about the city’s past, present, and future.
The centerpiece, titled “Pohang’s Growth, Love Story, and Future,” will depict figures with close ties to the city. These include former President Lee Myung-bak, late POSCO Honorary Chairman Park Tae-joon, soccer player Hwang Hee-chan, singer Jeon Yu-jin, and Father Nam Dae-young, all of whom have played significant roles in Pohang’s development or have roots in the area.
Another sculpture will recreate iconic scenes from the popular K-drama “When the Camellia Blooms,” which helped transform Pohang’s Guryongpo area into a tourist hotspot. A third installation will appeal to nostalgia, featuring beloved robot characters Taekwon V and Mazinger Z.
Extending the artistic display beyond the festival grounds, city officials have announced plans to exhibit a sand sculpture at Songdo Beach depicting a dance scene from the movie “La La Land.”
Festivalgoers can look forward to a range of activities, including a sand playground, moonlit sand walks, sand sculpture workshops, busking performances, and a multimedia fireworks show.
The sand sculptures will remain on display until October 7, allowing visitors ample time to appreciate the artworks beyond the festival dates.
Yoo Ho-sung, head of the city’s Marine Industry Department, expressed the city’s commitment to enhancing the festival’s quality. “We aim to make Pohang a destination that people want to visit again and again by continually improving the Yeongildae Sand Festival,” he said.
