IMSIL, Aug. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — A new exhibition hall introducing the history of South Korean cheese will be built in Imsil County, North Jeolla Province, where South Korea’s cheese industry first began.
The county recently secured 1 billion won (US$840,000) in funding to begin construction of the new exhibition hall at Imsil Cheese Park in December, aiming for completion by 2021.
The country will spend 8 billion won ($6.7 million) to introduce the history of ‘Imsil Cheese’, South Korea’s first cheese factory built in 1967.
The hall will also accommodate a memorial chamber for the late Father Ji Jeong-hwan, who passed away last year.
A Belgian-born Catholic priest, Father Ji came to Imsil Cathedral in 1964, where he began making cheese using milk from two long-tailed gorals.
He was endowed with South Korean citizenship after being recognized for taking care of people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups at various welfare facilities in North Jeolla Province.
