Climate Change Making Mosquitoes More Active in Spring

SEOUL, May 1 (Korea Bizwire)As climate change drives mosquitoes to become less active in the summer and more active in the spring and fall, earlier measures are needed for mosquito control.

According to data from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the mosquito activity index (in parks) reached 36.17 points in April, entering the “concern” level of the mosquito alert (25 to 50).

In the last 10 days (April 21-30), the outdoor mosquito activity index stood at 43.64 points, approaching the “caution” level (50 to 75).

Mosquito activity in July and August has declined since 2018 in response to hotter summer temperatures.

When Seoul’s daytime temperature exceeded 20 degrees Celsius on April 21, the mosquito activity index in parks reached 51.3 points, surpassing the “caution” threshold for the first time this year.

Last year, the mosquito activity index reached the “caution” level for the first time on May 25th (50.7).
