SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — With Disney+ soon to enter and intensify competition in the South Korean video streaming market, Coupang Inc. is stepping up to improve its own streaming platform.
Mobile app tracker Wiseapp conducted a survey of smartphone users who are 10 years old or older, which showed that Coupang Play, a video streaming service run by the e-commerce giant, ranked 5th (1.72 million) in terms of users.
Coupang has been focusing on the rapid expansion of Coupang Play, which was first introduced in December last year, to maximize the lock-in effect as seen from the case of the Amazon Prime Video service.
In the meantime, Disney+ with its attractive content and competitive pricing is very likely to speed up competition in Korean market.
Coupang is stepping up to revamp its content by adding weekend comedy show “SNL Korea”, which first aired on Sept. 4.
SNL Korea, which aired from 2011 to 2017 on cable channel tvN, is an adaption of the long-running late night comedy show “Saturday Night Live” on U.S. TV network NBC. Now, Coupang has made the show an exclusive to the Coupang Play service.
Coupang is also working on securing broadcasting rights for the U.S. National Football League and other sports games to attract sports fans.
