SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea was blanketed by heavy snow on Tuesday, with up to 120 centimeters piling up in the mountainous regions of Jeju, the southern resort island.
Snowfall extended across the country, with over 10 centimeters recorded in cities such as Chungju, Wonju, and Daejeon. The capital, Seoul, saw around 2.5 centimeters of snow.

As of 8 a.m., snow was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 centimeters per hour in areas under snow advisories, with some locations experiencing up to 5 centimeters per hour.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted continued snowfall and rain through Wednesday. Central and southern regions, including Daejeon, Sejong, Gwangju, and the provinces of South and North Jeolla and South Chungcheong, are expected to receive up to 15 centimeters of snow. Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province could see an additional 3 to 8 centimeters.

On the snowy morning of January 27, public officials, festival organizers, and staff at the Sancheoneo Ice Festival in Hwacheon County, Gangwon Province, were engaged in snow removal operations to ensure the safety of visitors.
A cold snap accompanied the snowfall, with morning temperatures ranging from minus 10°C to 0°C. Daytime highs were forecasted to remain between minus 5°C and 6°C.
The severe weather caused travel disruptions, with three flights canceled and approximately 70 passenger ships on 56 sea routes suspended, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.

In the early hours of January 28, the day before Lunar New Year, a heavy snow warning was issued in Daejeon. A vehicle involved in an accident is being towed from a snow-covered road in the city’s downtown area.
For safety reasons, authorities closed access to 19 national parks across the country, officials confirmed.
