SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Korea Bizwire)Netizens are increasingly concerned about their neutered pet cats experiencing unexpected side effects.

An animal-related documentary on the state-run education broadcaster EBS introduced a pet cat that pees on unfamiliar smells.

The cat’s owner believed that the cat had been neutered. It turned out that the cat, however, wasn’t.

“There are rare cases where people can’t tell if their pets have been neutered,” said Dr. Kim Myeong-cheol, a licensed veterinarian. “Neutering is essential to lower the feline’s obsession for territory.”

Audiences found it ‘absurd’ that a cat would need to be neutered twice.

“I have a female cat. I took her to get neutered, but she still showed signs of estrus. I had to take her into the veterinary clinic for another surgical procedure,” said Park Min-ji, the owner of two cats.

“The cat has been heavily traumatized ever since. I am worried,” she said.

“Neuter surgery is a lot more difficult in the case of a malformed uterus or cryptorchid,” said Dr. Lee Sang-cheol, a licensed veterinarian. “It is very rare to re-do a neuter surgery because of a medical failure in the previous operation.”

A malformed uterus refers to a case when a uterus, normally shaped like a letter ‘y’, deforms into a different shape.

Cryptorchid refers to a case when the testicles are not located in the scrotum, but rather deeper into the body. It is a rare case that happens to 1.7 percent of all cats.
