JEJU, Jan. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — The Jeju National Institute of Agriculture and Technology announced on January 2 that it had named a newly developed mandarin orange ‘Fragrance of Fall’, meaning a citrus that can be enjoyed during the fall season, and applied for related variety protections.
The new fruit was developed with Golden Fragrance, an existing citrus, partially cross-fertilized with Red Fragrance. The new citrus typically ripens in late October and can be harvested from November to December.
The new variety is known for its sweetness, and is easy to peel. It does not have black spots on the peel, which increases its commercial value.
It is expected to be a popular alternative to Golden Fragrance as it can be harvested in November despite its high sugar content.
The institute plans to grow 8,000 seedlings this year and evaluate customer preferences through a series of farm demonstrations.
Once it is qualified, with adequate farming techniques available, the institute will expand the usage rights to seed companies. The institution is expected to develop three other new citruses by the end of 2022.
