SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean tech giants Samsung and LG are intensifying their push into artificial intelligence, developing proprietary AI models to boost productivity and streamline operations across their businesses.
LG AI Research unveiled its latest AI model, EXAONE 3.5, in December and launched ChatEXAONE, an enterprise AI assistant available to employees within the company’s secure network. The service allows staff to utilize internal data without concerns about security breaches.
From January 14 to 16, LG AI Research operated a demonstration popup at LG Twin Tower to help employees familiarize themselves with ChatEXAONE. The system distinguishes itself from ChatGPT through its workplace customization features. Users select their department — such as marketing, administration, purchasing, or design — and specify their role to receive tailored suggestions and responses.
The platform drew significant interest, attracting 2,247 visitors — about one-third of LG Twin Tower employees — during the three-day demonstration. Since its December 9 launch, ChatEXAONE has garnered more than 17,000 users.
“Security work requires staying current with the latest trends, and data collection is fundamental,” said Kim Ji-hoon, an IT security manager at LG Electronics, after testing ChatEXAONE. “This tool will help efficiently organize diverse data sets.”
Bae Kyunghoon, head of LG AI Research, said the company aims to have 20,000 active users among LG affiliates’ 80,000 domestic office workers this year. “We expect to exceed this target ahead of schedule,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics upgraded its enterprise AI service to Samsung Gauss2 last November. Unlike its predecessor, the new version can simultaneously process multiple data types, including text, code, and images. Samsung has integrated Gauss into various operations, including customer service centers, where it assists representatives by automatically categorizing and summarizing consultation content.
Both companies plan to integrate generative AI technology into their products. Samsung Electronics will gradually incorporate AI capabilities into devices like the Galaxy series, while LG Electronics plans to implement EXAONE in its 2025 LG Gram laptops and other affiliate products and services.
“Better productivity through generative AI could accelerate technological adoption and product launches by reducing research and development time,” said Oh Il-sun, director of the Korea CXO Institute. “Given AI’s potential, we anticipate positive impacts on business growth and profitability, along with improved human resource management through improved employee capabilities.”
