SEOUL, May 11 (Korea Bizwire) — Football and women’s basketball have a high percentage of family spectators, while men’s basketball and baseball are particularly popular among couples.
According to a survey of 34,978 spectators of five professional sports and nine leagues by the Korean Professional Sports Association, the number of family visitors to football matches accounted for 43.8 percent of total spectators compared to 47.5 percent for women’s basketball, both higher than for other sports, which were in the 30 percent range.
Sports aficionados were most fond of watching baseball, accounting for 12.6 percent, and men’s basketball, accounting for 13.9 percent.
The number of female spectators increased for the third consecutive year to 43.4 percent last year. By age group (both genders), those in their 20s accounted for 28.9 percent of the spectators, making it the largest demographic group.
The most popular events were men’s and women’s professional volleyball, with 13.7 percent (women’s volleyball) and 12.7 percent (men’s volleyball) of the respondents saying they had watched a match in person for the first time.
