SEOUL, Sept. 30 (Korea Bizwire) — Twitch, an online streaming platform owned by Amazon.com, announced that it will cut the maximum resolution for its service in South Korea due to rising costs.
Twitch issued an official notice on Thursday saying, “Starting from Friday, we will adjust the quality of original video for Korean viewers on channels with an image quality adjustment function. The maximum video resolution in South Korea will be reduced to 720p.”
As for the reason behind the adjustment, Twitch cited the ever-rising increase in service costs, saying that an alternative solution is needed.
Nonetheless, it didn’t disclose in detail why its service costs are rising.
Some market watchers speculated that Twitch’s latest decision could be related to the rising conflicts between South Korean internet service providers and content providers such as YouTube and Netflix surrounding the network usage issue.
Since Twitch’s announcement came just one day before the opening of the League of Legends (LOL) World Championship, domestic fans have expressed their displeasure with the company’s new policy.
