SEOUL, Sept. 23 (Korea Bizwire)COVID-19 is speeding up the era of digital public education, as unexpectedly as it seems, while taking a toll on offline education.

Since April of last year, following the first wave of the pandemic across the country, education authorities have scrambled to set up digital infrastructure across all schools.

By June, some 310,000 elementary, middle and high schools had been connected to a gigabit Wi-Fi network, allowing the use of technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) for education.

The Ministry of Education has continued to improve on the AI education diagnosis tool for high schoolers listening to lectures on the public education channel EBS and has developed the same tool for elementary and middle schools for release in March 2022.

The metaverse, a three-dimensional virtual space, has also entered the school environment.

Last year, teachers from the Daegu Edutech Research Club set up a website to host a ‘virtual school’ metaverse platform, building a virtual school with floors, classrooms, and libraries to raise the sense of reality for students.
