POHANG, April 19 (Korea Bizwire) — Amid the rising popularity of the “1,000-won meal,” colloquially known as “happiness for 1,000 won,” on university campuses across the nation, Handong Global University has garnered attention for its more unorthodox offering of a “100-won ($0.08) meal.”

According to Handong Global University, since 2016, their “Handong Manna” initiative has provided financially struggling students with basic cafeteria menus, originally priced at 4,000 won, for a mere 100 won. The project, named after the biblical story of the Israelites, has served approximately 59,000 meals to date.

Reportedly, the idea for the project came from a single parent donation of 3 million won, made after hearing that their child had encountered a starving student. Following a successful pilot program, the project has been sustained by contributions from alumni, the general public, and the alumni association.

While Handong Manna is open to all students, the project’s principle emphasizes responsible usage, thereby allowing students to choose between the regular menu and the 100-won Hakshik according to their conscience. Handong Manna is available from Monday to Friday, with one meal per day being eligible for the benefit.

While not all students may opt for Handong Manna, the school remains committed to its continued existence through sponsorship and student support. The university’s latest endeavor to provide students with affordable meals is the “President’s Recommended Gukbap” menu, priced at 2,500 won, launched last year to benefit the general student population.

Choi Do-sung, President of the university, expressed that he hoped students would be able to savor a warm and comforting meal, akin to a home-cooked dish, at any time of the day.
