SEOUL, Feb. 22 (Korea Bizwire) – In anticipation of Jeongwol Daeboreum (the 15th day of the first lunar month), Songpa District conducted an environmentally friendly and safe jwibulnori (rat fire play) experience on February 20 at Mulbit Square in Seoul, utilizing PET bottles and LED lights.
Traditionally held on the eve of Jeongwol Daeboreum, jwibulnori participants swing cans filled with burning items to create streaks of light, before setting fires on ridges of fields and paddies with the purpose of burning weeds to reduce damage from pests and rats.
The event was organized by a number of environmental groups in Songpa District as well as the Songpa District Council for Nature Conservation.
About 50 members from these organizations participated to revive the dwindling tradition of jwibulnori, substituting real fire with LED lights and recycled PET bottles, in an effort to continue this cultural practice in a safe and eco-friendly manner.
