SEOUL, Aug. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s overseas aid agency announced that it will join Pakistan’s efforts to improve water quality as it addresses the problems caused by rapid population growth, urbanization, and climate change.
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) said it plans to invest US$7.42 million by 2024 to design legislative, institutional, and administrative solutions for water quality controlin Pakistan, and design a standard operating procedure that caters to the country’s water quality needs.
The agency will send devices used to detect heavy metal and colon bacillus, ventilation facilities, vehicles, and other equipment needed to improve the research environment.
The agency will also offer training programs in South Korea and Pakistan to educate water experts and professionals, sharing the South Korean experience and technology with them.
A recent report by the United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) said 70 percent of the water used in Pakistan, home to 220 million people, is contaminated, killing more than 50,000 children every year.
