SEOUL, Dec. 3 (Korea Bizwire) – The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has marked a major milestone, announcing that its 5 millionth international patent publication belongs to Samsung Electronics.

The patent, filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), pertains to cutting-edge technology that enhances smartphone camera quality by reducing image distortion and improving focus stability during image processing.

Samsung, a global leader in innovation, ranked second in international patent filings worldwide as of the end of 2023. The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) highlighted that this achievement reflects the company’s commitment to technological advancement and underscores South Korea’s growing prominence in the global patent landscape.

The PCT system, currently adopted by 158 member countries, allows inventors to streamline the process of securing patents across multiple jurisdictions. It accounts for 60% of all global international patent filings, offering significant cost and time efficiencies.

South Korea joined the PCT in 1984 and has consistently ranked as the fourth-largest filer globally since 2020, following China, the United States, and Japan. Notable contributors include Samsung Electronics with 3,924 filings and LG Electronics with 1,887 filings in 2023.

South Korean universities have also made their mark, with Seoul National University and Korea University ranking 7th and 11th, respectively, among global academic institutions for patent filings.

South Korea’s influence extends beyond patent filings. Its patent office, recognized for its examination capabilities, has been designated as a PCT International Searching Authority since 1997.

Additionally, Korean patent literature became part of the PCT’s essential documentation in 2005, and Korean was adopted as an official language for PCT filings in 2007.

WIPO Director General Daren Tang commended South Korea for leveraging innovation and technology to drive economic transformation. KIPO Commissioner Kim Wan-ki stated that Samsung’s milestone patent symbolizes the high quality and innovation of South Korean patents, promising further support for small and medium enterprises and startups in navigating global markets through the PCT system.
