Time Spent Watching TV Programs on Smartphones Plunges

SEOUL, Aug. 22 (Korea Bizwire)The amount of time Koreans spend watching TV programs on smartphones has dropped sharply compared to a year ago, indicative of an increase in socializing resulting from the gradual return to normal life, a media regulation agency said Sunday.

The amount of time South Koreans spent watching 28 channel programs via smartphones averaged 49.3 minutes in June 2022, less than a third of the figure marked a year ago, according to the latest report from the Korea Communications Commission.

The amount of time spent watching TV programs via smartphones slid to 85.2 minutes in March, 61.8 minutes in April and 56.1 minutes in May after standing at 109 minutes in January and February.

The ratio of net users who watched TV programs through smartphones more than once per month rose to 71.3 percent in February from 70.9 percent in January.

This ratio, however, slid to 64.2 percent in March and continued on a downward trend, falling to 36.6 percent in June, half of the 70.1 percent reported a year ago.

The amount of time spent using smartphones dropped from 8,038 minutes in March to 7,335.2 minutes in June. This figure was down 6.1 percent from 7,808.9 minutes last year.
