SEOUL, Dec. 28 (Korea Bizwire) — Park Seon-ho, a 29-year-old local office worker, decided to spend the end of the year with high school friends exchanging ‘useless’ gifts.
“Last year, I got a pair of socks with Donald Trump’s face on it, with a slogan that said ‘Make America Great Again.’ It was absolutely shocking,” Park said.
This exchange of ‘useless’ gifts is a new tradition among millennials and Generation Z.
In response, Kakao Corp., the operator of South Korea’s top mobile messenger KakaoTalk, added a ‘useless gifts’ section to KakaoTalk’s gift shop, selling Trump-face socks, friend-face cushions, and a diffuser shaped like a chicken leg, to attract the MZ generation.
A majority of the customers visiting the useless gifts section were in their 20s.
“We didn’t use a separate algorithm to create the section. Rather, the staff themselves handpicked various items from various shops,” Kakao said.
